Deadpool Case Study
LO4 - Use a real example to look at how audiences are targeted.
Deadpool uses a wide range of traditional and digital advertising, here are some examples:
Along with these traditional and digital methods of advertising, the videos that go alongside the advertising campaign are also effective as they advertise anywhere and everywhere to guarantee that everyone sees them. This is good as it allows different audiences to be drawn in from areas such as social media ie. Ryan Reynolds fans that may not have watched the movie if he was not posting about it so much. By having such a huge advertising campaign, it promote Deadpool further as people remember seeing it in other places and therefore think about it and talk about it more often - creating the snowball effect.
The marketing campaign for Deadpool utilises traditional methods of advertising such as posters and billboards in order to extend it's target audience outside of the digital world and ensure that everyone has seen it while using typical deadpool imagery along with a lack of text to get the message across smoothly and easily. Furthermore, online and digital advertising is used in a different way in order to create a persona around deadpool and make sure it targets people in every method possible. By creating a social media account for deadpool along with a tinder account and hashtags, people on social media are encouraged to watch the film even more and become more invested within the character. Comedy and crude jokes are used within the advertising such as a rudely shaped venn diagram, innuendos and the use of the poo emoji. This advertising is used in order to still be age appropriate while adding a funny crude aspect to the advertising which represents the character's personality and makes people more likely to watch the film. The star power of Ryan Reynolds is used within the marketing campaign due to him being a household name - by him posting about the process of it more people are likely to be excited for the release of the film, even if it is not their usual genre.
The age statistic for the audience of Deadpool is 62.3% male - this may be because the crude jokes and social media posts from Ryan Reynolds are more aimed at males as he may feel like a relatable character. Furthermore, stereotypically males are socialised into liking superhero and action films opposed to romcoms. As well as this, the most common age for watching Deadpool in the late teens and twenties, this may be because the film is based on a comic that came out when these people were younger meaning they may have read it as a child. The most common ethnicity within the deadpool audience is caucasian - likely due to a lack of representation for other ethnicities and a mainly white cast.
The primary social class for Deadpool is C1 - lower middle class eg. managers, office jobs. This is the class that people just starting their career would be in (people likely to be in their late 20s) correlating with the reason that age range would also be interested in the film. Furthermore, as they are just starting a career they have a disposable income to spend on things such as going to the cinema.
